    Aloha everyone,

I seriously don't understand how people can afford not to complain about the gas prices here in Hawaii. I buy all my gas on any one of the various military bases, as we always get cheaper gas than those gas stations outside. I normally get a gallon of premium lower than most outside gas stations sell their regular unleaded.

Imagine my shock when just last week, it was over $4/gal here at Schofield Barracks (home of the US Army's 25th Infantry Division - Light). It was the same over at the Pearl Harbor-Hickam Combined Base (they merged, but I'm not sure that I got the name correct), although the off-base prices haven't risen quite as sharply, but they're still paying right around $3.96/gallon for regular unleaded gas.

I mean, we're not even in the summer season yet, not that Hawaii actually has a summer season. I mean that, like in the US Mainland, we get raped at the pump during the "summer" season, for no other reason than the gas companies here can do it. I mean, what else can we do except bitch and complain? If we want to drive our cars, we have to buy the gas, right?

Don't try that here at Fort Wood. Gas costs the same as it does off post but they throw a huge fit if they see you getting gas and aren't military.

I paid $60 to fill up today. Gas was $3.35/US Gal.

But don't you think everyone is frustrated by the little things that the ads pick apart? And anyone who is is anyone who may potentially switch.

    I think it's brilliant.
The problem is that the ads don't make fun of PCs, they make fun of the people who use PCs as nerdy, boring, stupid types, compared to the people who use Macs as hip, trendy, urban-cool. People put (what they think is) a lot of research into their PC purchases and if someone comes along and tells them they just made the wrong choice in a very snarky, sarcastic way, it can provoke two responses: 1) humiliation, or 2) anger (ego self-defense). Neither of which are good.

These Mac ads, in addition to whatever popularity they've achieved, are stirring up a lot of Mac hatred.

I cannot stand the "Mac guy" myself. He makes me want to switch to a PC.

Corporation tax only taxes companies profits...

How about if you need more tax revenue, you jack up taxes on imported goods?

Because then everyone else will do the same and your exports will suffer. Additionally its illegal under WTO rules.

Why are there so many Negative votes? An update to Aperture is a very good thing for photographers. If all these voters are people who were hoping for a MacBook Pro update, that doesn't quality you voting an Aperture update thread as negative. Big deal... the notebooks didn't get updated. Move along.

I really wish Apple offered a trial of Aperture on their Web site. I would love to try it out sometime.

And I thought that Target was better than Walmart. That's a sign that these companies have too much power. They want to protect their monopolistic power over DVD sales. Its ludicrous that Target and Walmart should be able to coerce the movie studios and Apple in such a way.

^ Yeah, how about voicemail? If its that important they'll leave a message. Shoot sometimes I even turn off my cell *GASP!* Dude, you need to go camping once in a while and get away from the world.

In my opinion, I don't think the "iPhone" will have more than 1GB just so that it wouldn't affect the sales of the lower capacity Nanos (the shuffle is an exception because its tiny and has a relatively lower concept).

A good selling point would have to be how fast you can put on your music. My sister's Treo is painfully slow at that.

I think the RFID devices have to be basically be touching to actually do anything, I don't think walking through turn style would pick it up. I guess this level of sensitivity is adjustable, but my AMEX card has to actually touch and remain on the reader for few seconds to actually read the card.

You're right. There's a visualisation of the dimensions of RFID 'readable volumes' here:

    Sigh.,

The problem is with RAID systems that you have to boot of a Non-Raid OS-x Boot Drive, run the two sets of firmware update, then move back to RAID drives.

Technically: the firware is stored on a specific sector of the hard drive, the computer reboots into special firmware loading software, the firmware loading software naively tries to search for the firm ware at a specific location on the hard drive. If you have RAID, its not going to find the firmware.

You can leave your RAID drives visible (you don't have to unplug anything) but you do have to boot of a booring-normal OS X setup.

There are few ways you can do this:
    * Install OS X on an External drive
    * Install OS X on an iPod harddrive (20 gig model, etc).
    * etc.

    Its a pain.

Should we tax those in high crime areas more because police respond there more often?

I was poking at SactoGuy18 and his evangelistic "Flat Tax" posts.

I went car free two years ago. I'd gladly pay a tax based on my use of the roads, whether it be by bicycle or bus. Or even the rare occasions I use ZipCar.

There's a serious rethinking going on about the use of automobiles in society. Whether it's London's congestion charge or San Francisco's dynamic parking meter rates or the total rethinking of requiring retailers to have x number of "free" parking spots.

The days of free roadways and free parking are over.

Just buy T-Mobile. Its cheap and compatible with the current iphone hardware. Looks like its worth around 10 billion. They could just write a check. Its actually right up apple's alley given their hostorical desire to control everything under the umbrella. They would obviously have to make significant investments to to get the network up to par with ATT and Verizon, but the returns are there. The iphone would be untouchable if Apple controlled the networks. They would change the whole industry. Better yet, Deutch Telekom wants to sell.

If your local store does not have it, call nationwide. My local verizon store said they ship for free anywhere in the U.S. by FedEx. I had one shipped to Florida. Hope this policy is not unique to the store I visited.

"luckRunsOut" reports above that the store in San Antonio off DeZavala have a lot left in stock.

    Thanks for your suggestion, Will.

However, some strange things are going on over here. As I mentioned, I have installed OSX on an external HD (connected via FW800), but my internal HD doesn't even show up in Disc Utility. I assume that my internal HD has gone to heaven.

The new setup (using the external HD) works quite well, but this is of course only a temporary solution.

    Purchased: Aug '07
    Model No: A1186
    EMC No: 2138
    Mac Pro/3.0_8CX/4x1/2x7300GT/500/2xSD/AP/BT

    Logic board:
    Part number: 630-7951
    Serial Number: J5*****X7QB

    Upgrades:
Added: 8gb Kingston memory (total 12gb)
    Added: 3x1tb drives (total 3.5tb)

Couple weeks back, system blinked off. The machines powers on, but there's no chime and the system doesn't boot at all. Done the SMC reset, reseated RAM, drives, video cards etc. Suspected the logic board.

Troubleshooting (from Frys, Apple authorized) confirms it's the logic board.

Now, going through the process of pulling the old board to trade in for a replacement "X7Q" board. Probably this one:

    http://www.galaxyhp.com/Mac-Pro-Early-2007-8-core-Logic-Board-ver2-new-wexchange_p_177.html

I got the machine disassembled but I am unable to remove the heat sinks/CPUs. The 4 captive screws loosen, even took them all the way out of the machine, but the sinks seem to be stuck. It doesn't just lift out as most of the online info I've found indicates that it should.

Unsure of how hard to pull on this thing. It wobbles very slightly, but feels firmly stuck on...enough that the board will flex if I pull it any harder.

More reading makes me think it might be the thermal paste is just really sticking? This is really stuck though...almost as though there's another screw I can't see. I thought if I pulled hard enough the CPU might come out along with the sink.

Also I ran across an article (after the fact) that states the order of screw removal from the heat sinks needs to be in a specific crossing pattern. Can't imagine how that matters.

Of course, I paid through the nose for this machine back in late '07. Bought Apple Care even. All long since expired...now that I need it. Getting desperate. This machine is a workhorse and I see no value in replacing it if I can fix it for 700 to 800 bucks.

    Any one have ideas?
