Lost in all this is the fact that the iPod is 5 on the 23rd...

Anyone else here even curious if there is a new iPod going to be released on the 5th birthday? I have read through 3 pages of posts and not found anyone offering this thought.

So I will throw it in. :)

New iPod Video (true video widescreen) on the 23rd!

In one week, the final Halo game from Bungie will be released, and we will all finally get to see the downfall of planet Reach up close and personal. Just like the planet, Bungie is closing out their series of Halo games with a bang, filling the game with many improvements and new features.

Agreed! Macbooks only had the option for glossy.
Makes sense, sort of. Why make it more confusing for consumers? I can understand the non-glossy option for MBPs since some professionals require accurate color, and therefore need matte screens.

I love how everybody is like "I've got the CDs who cares" or "Buy the CDs they are cheaper". The Beatles on iTunes isn't for you. It is for people who don't buy CDs, it's for the future when the majority of people get digital music and it's certainly for a whole generation of kids who won't know what a CD is or care, in the same way that vinyl is now seen as archaic.

I'm sure I am repeating someone else's thoughts, but it doesn't seem clear to a lot of people.

Vinyl record might be something "archaic" in some peoples' opinion, but digital music can become a "fossil" in the future (in a very near future i hope :D). And don't worry, there are a lot of people who care about vinyl records; for instance a musician candidate like me.

Surely Hard Drive players are on the way out in general? Must be a major reason for the devices to break.

I read books off electronic devices all the time. The first machine I used was the Nokia 9500

    http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/i/z/rv/2004/09/nokia-9300-400x480.jpg

    That's actually a Nokia 9300 but it's similar.

Having the right software is crucial. It needs to be tweakable to show the text at exactly the right font size.

I found it easier to hold the phone vertically not horizionally, and read the text like a vertical newspaper column.

The way the page is turned is crucial too.

Some software can scroll it automatically for you (you pickthe scroll speed, but sometimes it's just a little too fast or a little too slow)- thats suitable for undemanding books or ones where you can read at the same rate for all the way, but for most books manual turn is preferable.

The button to click to turn pages has to fall under your thumb or the right finger to make it an automatic action. For technical books, you need to be able to scroll back and forwards without changing your hand grip.

An unobtrusive system of marking your place, making notes, or marking paragraphs that you want to return to later is also important, but not always available.

When I got fed up with the Nokia 9500 being too big, (and I broke mine) I brought the O2 XDA Mini S

    http://www.mobiles.co.uk/cache/2006-07-20-18-06-20/b582200e-0a96-4845-9f49-0ba9d7df606d/o2-xda-mini-s.jpg

It has a tiny screen, 1.5 inches x 2.25 inches (45mm x 65mm) which is getting to be about the same size as the iPod video but I can still read books on it, and have read about 20 so far. I'm very short sighted but I can read it without glasses - just hold it a bit closer.

That tiny screen is probably too small for most people, so I hope Apple's is a bit bigger.

I have a friend who uses his old Palm PDA solely for reading - never mind all the pda functions - he only uses it for reading ebooks.

As happy and excited I am about this update, I can't stop feeling a little irritated about the amount of time it has taken for it to come out.

It is 3 years since I first almost bankrupted myself by buying an octo-core machine. And I bought it based on all the rhetoric Apple spewed. Since then the only thing I seem to own that actually utilizes all that power is bleedin' Handbrake, an open source application.

Don't get me wrong, watching Handbrake crunch HD video at 120 FPS is a thing of wonder, but using FCP and having 7 of 8 cores sat there idly doing nothing has profoundly bothered me.

I guess it is my own fault for being such an early adopter and being so utterly addicted to Apple's marketing hype.

PS., Please god, don't let this new Final Cut be anything like the first iteration of Aperture 3. One of my worst software nightmares ever.

I thought there were slightly more women? It would make sense that there would be as they live longer!

Well, I just thought I made a mistake by writing the above, but did some research and to my surprise, we are in trouble!

    According to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_sex_ratio

In 2010 the world sex ratio was 101 males per 100 females.

No wonder, like Rodney Dangerfield used to say: 'There's no respect!'

There is a link to a disk image at "http://developer.apple.com/tools/download/", but when I click on it I am asked for my ADC member password, and on the next page there is no trace of Xcode 2.4. Only a link to XCode 2.3 download. Maybe they just got the name wrong, but I won't download 915 MB to find out.

Since it is a large download Apple is doing a staggered roll out of the download (Apple folks stated this). It appears to be rolled to premier members, then select, and finally free members.

And apparently now they admit that it was bull-****.

    http://www.tuaw.com/2006/08/18/secureworks-admits-to-falsifying-macbook-wireless-hack/

    ;)
yeah, using a third-party card AND driver software. stuff that 99.9% of macbook owners would never use anyway...if their goal was to show THAT a macbook could be hacked, they did show it. but they did not show that a macbook being used in a normal way using macbook drivers and hardware can be hacked. pretty piss-poor, IMO.

I don't think Wal-Mart makes money on a lot of their DVDs. They sell them at a loss to get people in their stores. If people buy on iTunes, they don't come into Wal-Mart.
15+ dollars for a 15 cent disc with 45 cents in packaging around it shipped for about 95 cents. Walmart is making plenty. Wholesale for new DVDs is about 7 dollars less distribution costs (typically less than a dollar a disc). Older movies I have seen go for as little as 2$ wholesale.

Does your screw stick out a little bit or is it leveled with the plastic?

It's level in the plastic, and dead center, so it's really hardly noticeable. Not sure why they had to do that though, you'd think they could fasten it the same way they do the old heatsink. Of course, I don't know much about heatsink placement and MB mobo's, so I should just keep my mouth shut I guess.

    man i can't wait until the 12th

So far I have yet to see an official confirmation from a reputable (read "not-rumour") web site.

The "confirmations" flying around all seem to be the rumour sites referencing each other.

Until I see iLounge or MacWorld get an invitation I won't be getting my hopes up for an secret-Apple-ninja-attack event.

Not at all. I've had predictions go wrong before, so this is nothing new to me. But it just annoys me that some people are so concerned with getting the best computer at the moment when it'll only be the best for a few months at best, and in the case of the MacBook, isn't even the best.

lol, people will always want the latest and greatest in this consumerist society. thats what makes america, america! if u dont like it, go to europe :p (im joking, plz, no one take offense)

The top Intel CPU at the moment is 2.8Ghz, while the AMD 2600+ (2.13Ghz) is AMD's best offering, even though there is almost a 700Mhz speed difference there the AMD will still be as fast if not faster as the apparently (going by Mhz) supreme Intel.

    Both of you are wrong.

Apple is a vertical systems integrator and vendor. They sell an vertically integrated solution that includes both software and hardware. They've been like this since the 70s, back when it was in-style.

These days, these types of vendors are rare. IBM still is with some POWER machines running AIX, HP has their Itanium/HP-UX systems and of course Oracle and the SPARC/Solaris boxes, but of course, these are mostly big-Iron Unix solutions, which is about the only place you'll find vertical solutions anymore.

Apple probably is the last of the consumer vendors doing vertical integration.

Ding, ding, ding....we have a winner! The correct answer is: Apple is an all-in-one company, integrating both hardware and software.
