We bought seven MacBooks shortly after they were released and three of them started having problems (random shutdown) almost immediately. When the third one started acting up I called our vendor to ask if there were any know problems. It was obvious that they had answered that question before it came from me (and interesting that they never mentioned it when I sent in the first two). We sent all three of them back to Apple for new motherboards, no cost and no questions. The down side is that the kept each machine for 10 business days because of their backlog.

My girlfriends MacBook, runs at 15 degrees C pretty much all the time.

FWIW, 15C = 59F. I've never heard of a processor running that low. Maybe it does, but that sounds really really odd.

Pentax use Samsung sensors.
They may use Samsung in some cameras, buy they also make extensive use of Sony sensors. I'm sure one of Pentax will confirm, but I thought the majority (not all) of their sensors are from Sony.
Here is a CNET article from a few days ago, as just one example
Sony's sensors are used not only in its own still cameras and video cameras but also in SLR cameras from Nikon and Pentax. The company isn't afraid to raise expectations about backside illumination and other technologies it plans to use in its sensors.

Cydia is your friend. Of course Mobile Safari doesn't (officially) support file downloads so regardless you're still SOL unless you predownload and transfer your FLV/SWF files.

This is awesome news. I said just the other day that I probably wouldn't buy a 23" iMac (though I would *look* at one) and I would probably just get a 23" ACD + Mac Mini instead... now that they've brought back the wall-mounting option I'm very tempted indeed. My current iMac G5 (rev B) is wall-mounted to save desktop space. The weight of the new 24" is about the same as the older 20" so that isn't an issue for my existing mount. Would just have to check that the position on the wall won't be too low.
I'm thinking of going away next week... if I weren't I'd have probably ordered one already!

I used to think the same way. 2 kids off to college, money is tight but I gave them each their choice of laptops:
1.) kid#1 chose a Dell because she <gasp> liked Vista :eek:
2.) kid#2 chose the plain old white macbook
3 years later, guess which one is currently crap? Seriously, Kid#1 comes home one day, opens up her Dell and she's got 3 keys missing one of which is the Enter key - has no clue where they went. :D Also, the battery is lasting a full 20 minutes and the DVD drive is kaput. The damn thing creaks and moans more than my arthritic joints.
Now, the lowly white macbook looks like it's been used as a door mat (which I polished up for kid #2 in about 5 minutes) but it works flawlessly.
Really... don't rationalize the cost. Kids are tough on these things and you aren't always there to "learn 'em" how to handle them. A well built mac + Applecare is a pretty secure future for their learning experience.

No hardware in WWDC '11? Apple always said they are about Software and Hardware, well then it wouldn't make sense for them to omit hardware from the conference.

Clearly, but as a SWAG (scientific wild ass guess) I think the back of the envelope is within a factor of two of reality. i.e. The jobs impact of a $60B cut in the federal budget would eliminate ~100K to 400K direct federal and first-line contractor jobs. (I'm not counting the ripple effects of the loss of those jobs on other folks like the grocery store clerk etc...). In the worst case scenario this is comparable to the total number rdowns was saying are employed by the top 10 defense contractors.
My point was that any cut in spending that is large enough to make a real difference in reducing the deficit will result in large numbers of lost jobs.
I think it would be nice if the online balance the 2015 budget tool from earlier in the thread would incorporate this at some level in their model to show the expected effect of federal + direct federal contractor jobs when funds are re-allocated.
For the spending part of the equation I think this can be estimated directly from current reality, you could count the dollars spent and jobs created within the federal government and first-line contractors for each department or line in the budget. He didn't say anything about iChat and how it might evolve into a phone service with an integrated iPod/iPhone. In fact, everything they did show are pretty much improvements to existing technologies, except Time Machine (way cool). They didn't add HD-DVD/Blueray to the Mac Pros. I guess what I'm getting at are things that didn't show up are most likely software technologies that have an accompaning hardware device to go with it, and since those products aren't ready they can't spill the beans just yet.

The only usable iPod is the iPod Touch. The ClickWheel "interface" of the classic is a royal pain in the back when you have to navigate through thousands of titles.
If you use a classic for a long time, you get very used to the click wheel and find navigation easy.
My soon to be sister-in-law has had a classic since the third generation (currently uses a 5th gen and an iPhone). She has got so used to the click wheel, she can move around her library (which maxes out her 80 Gig drive) in seconds. It's amazing to watch!
I guess it is like some people do not like touchscreen phones and would prefer to have a fiddly little keyboard to type messages than a virtual keyboard.
My guess is that the classic will remain, but may get a touch interface, maybe even a virtual click wheel using a little bit of vibration to give some feedback.
There is a chance that the next iPod Touch will have a 128 Gig option, but it will be at a high price. I always think there is a need for a cost effective hard drive based iPod. Even looking at the Keynote where the iPod was announced, SJ compared the price per song and at the time, dividing the purchase price of devices by the number of tracks they held (a bit meaningless, but does prove a point), Flash was at $10 / track and Hard Drive was at $0.30 per track.
Doing those calculations of the various models of Touch and the Classic you get;
(Based on 256 Kbps AAC)
8GB Touch = $0.31 per track
32 GB Touch = $0.08 per track
64 GB Touch = $0.05 per track
Classic = $0.01 per track
So the classic is currently the king of affordable personal music storage, however flash memory prices have fallen faster than super compact hard drive prices so should Apple double the capacity and keep the same price points on the next refresh, you could see Touches at around $0.02 to $0.03, so not much in it!
My last point is that no matter how much storage a device has, there will always be people who will want more. I know people who have music libraries that fill a 2 TB external drive! They have however encoded their old CD's at 512 Kbps, so can use the option to re-encode to 128 Kbps when they Sync. The solution here could be cloud based storage, but you would need a constant connection to the internet which would firstly require every device has more than just WiFi. Probably need the Kindle 3G type of solution. Secondly, it is not always possible to be connected (i.e. on flights, underground metro systems, etc) and thirdly, you'd be draining your battery!
