The new iPod is just a size bump of the 5G, the new features are just software updates.

So the 60% brighter display is just a software update?

I think the main thing that discourages people from buying a ZUNE is the Zune...

anyway if this Beatles thing works with Apple, it will most likely be a limited time excklusivity 6 months to one year tops and then open to other online sellers.

Yes. Apple could give away The Beatles songs (i.e. take no money themselves) and STILL win because every Beatles song sold via iTunes is a song that (a) isn't sold from another store, thus depriving others from that revenue and (b) isn't usable on other players, without a process that is too involved for Joe Public.

Not to mention the HUGE optics of getting The Beatles who, like it or not, are the biggest act in pop music history. Even if the exclusivity contract was 1 year, that takes the wind out of others sails (pun intended), and provides the public a year to stock their playlists with Apple-branded Beatles tunes, after which the momentum is gone and sales via other online outlets is minimal.

This would be a BIG win for Apple.

The only usable iPod is the iPod Touch. The ClickWheel "interface" of the classic is a royal pain in the back when you have to navigate through thousands of titles.

If you use a classic for a long time, you get very used to the click wheel and find navigation easy.

My soon to be sister-in-law has had a classic since the third generation (currently uses a 5th gen and an iPhone). She has got so used to the click wheel, she can move around her library (which maxes out her 80 Gig drive) in seconds. It's amazing to watch!

I guess it is like some people do not like touchscreen phones and would prefer to have a fiddly little keyboard to type messages than a virtual keyboard.

My guess is that the classic will remain, but may get a touch interface, maybe even a virtual click wheel using a little bit of vibration to give some feedback.

There is a chance that the next iPod Touch will have a 128 Gig option, but it will be at a high price. I always think there is a need for a cost effective hard drive based iPod. Even looking at the Keynote where the iPod was announced, SJ compared the price per song and at the time, dividing the purchase price of devices by the number of tracks they held (a bit meaningless, but does prove a point), Flash was at $10 / track and Hard Drive was at $0.30 per track.

    Doing those calculations of the various models of Touch and the Classic you get;
    (Based on 256 Kbps AAC)
    8GB Touch = $0.31 per track
    32 GB Touch = $0.08 per track
    64 GB Touch = $0.05 per track
    Classic = $0.01 per track

So the classic is currently the king of affordable personal music storage, however flash memory prices have fallen faster than super compact hard drive prices so should Apple double the capacity and keep the same price points on the next refresh, you could see Touches at around $0.02 to $0.03, so not much in it!

My last point is that no matter how much storage a device has, there will always be people who will want more. I know people who have music libraries that fill a 2 TB external drive! They have however encoded their old CD's at 512 Kbps, so can use the option to re-encode to 128 Kbps when they Sync. The solution here could be cloud based storage, but you would need a constant connection to the internet which would firstly require every device has more than just WiFi. Probably need the Kindle 3G type of solution. Secondly, it is not always possible to be connected (i.e. on flights, underground metro systems, etc) and thirdly, you'd be draining your battery!

    Phil

That's not quite it. People were annoyed at the fact that the event was so hyped, not that it was somehow a "bad" thing.

It wasn't over hyped by Apple, they only stuck a teaser on their homepage for 24 hours.

For those wondering why Apple came out with the new iMacs today.A Wednesday. It's probably because Steve Jobs didn't want the media to think the keynote was going to be about the 23" iMac..( now 24" )

Get the iMac's out of the way now so the media can speculate on other things.

The drivers are part of the OS.

Apple did not write all of the OS much of it comes from BSD UNIX and some more of it comes from CMU's Mach. Many (most?) of the hundreds of applications that ship with Mac OSX are Open Source that Apple did not write.

We shouldn't care much about if Apple employees wrote the code or if they hired the job out of it the downloaded an Open Source application off the Internet. If the software has a problem it needs to be fixed.

The danger of only quoting part of a post is that you will miss the fact that the poster said pretty much the exact same thing. I was pointing out that it wasn't Apple's code, but I pointed out that they still needed to fix it.

Personally I am happy that there is a company out there like Apple that will do whatever it takes to push progress and top of the line technology in ways that no other company has the balls to do! I am glad that they are determined to weed out inferior technology in the name of progress! They even obsolete their own products at the hight of them being the most popular gadgets on earth, and WHY?... Because they thought of something cooler. You know any other company with the balls to do that? No, they would just milk the product as long as they possibly can, and then serve a minor update that isn't too cost prohibitive.

    Ya, I'll stick with Apple's M.O. Thanks! :p .../snip

You do realize that the same company milked the GMA 950 for over 3 years. Not only that but in the case of the Mac Mini, they removed the dedicated 64 MB card that existed in the G4 days, replaced it with the Intel integrated one, and charged 100 bucks more for it.

I could get into Cinema Displays, Mac Pros, or anything else non-iPhone but its almost too easy.

The specific application of force by US warplanes under UN auspices, with request by the rebels and the Arab League should give the operation any legal cover it should need in both International and US law. Moreover, since NATO is also involved, our treaty obligations require us to act as well.

actually NATO doesn't come into play ... or do you see any german troops ? ;)

the fact that the very same arguments come up regarding germans none-vote in the security council like they did during the start of the iraq 'coalition of the willing' discussion makes it rather obvious that their are a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes yet again
"the germans are risking their EU leadership" "the germans are risking cross atlantic relationships"
because obviously according to the press playing the poodle of the United states or helping Sarkozy to win elections is desirable

Just think about it: Sarkozy got funding for his last campaign illegally from libya. Can there be a more convinient way of getting away from that dirty laundry than bombing them into oblivion ? While at home showing how much of a strong leader he is for increasing popularity ?

ThinkSecret is generally dead on when it comes to things like this. So, it'd be great if they released an updated 23" iMac. I just got a 5G iPod 30GB in July and am happy with it so I don't need a new 'pod. And yes, I just got a new MacBook 2 weeks ago, but for future purchases, a 23" iMac would be neat.

Steve looks unhealthy. He's not as sharp as he used to be. His keynotes were flawless. He stuttered several times, forgot what he was saying in mid sentence, and handed a considerable amount of the keynote to other people. Steve was a control freak in past WWDC keynotes.

I think he may be in not-so-good health. But I've said that before.

I was thinking the same thing. He was not mentally very sharp.

Normally he is so excited and pumped. In past keynotes when he was sitting at the computer and grabbed his water, it with a purpose, excited to get on with it. In past keynotes it was the minor things, his body language and such, that would get me so pumped, I would be bouncing in my chair watching the keynote.

All of that was missing yesterday. He was distracted, and acted as if he had no energy at all.

But I think what tipped me off that something was wrong, was him allowing others to take up half of the presentation time.

I know that when Wal-Mart found out that Sam Walton was going to pass, they scrambled trying to absorb as much of Sam into the "Corporate Culture" as they could. For example, his dog Roy on the dogfood ect.

With Steve sharing the stage with his subordinates as much as he did, it was like Apple is now trying to show that there were other people besides Steve at Apple that have the passion.

Their mode of dress was even contrived. You could tell that not all of them were used to wearing thier shirt tales out. hehe The big guy's, that did the Mac Pro presentation, shirt was wrinkled where it had been tucked in his pants all morning long.

Sorry to ramble, but I just have a bad feeling that something is up with Steve. If there is, I hope there is enough time to absorb Steve into the Corporate Culture (instead of the tyrant image he has now) and cultivate someone to quickly step up.

heh, That was selfish, sorry. If something is up with Steve, I wish him all the best and hope that he can cured, and if not, pass in peace. :(

I would prefer to be totally wrong, and that he was just having a bad day!

FYI, for those that say "who cares about Walmart" there is this little fact (of which I'm not going to sight a source because I'm busy at work).
Walmart sells 40% of all DVDs sold in the US.
Think about that. Of all the places that sell DVDs, of all the places people go, 4 of every 10 is bought at walmart. That is ridicules power, and not something the studios will just gloss over. They will make sure they know what they are doing before making steps forward. Maybe it won't matter at all, but it isn't a number to just ignore.

I too have a well known fact, although I can't give away my source at this time.

The Banana market is going to explode soon. I have heard rumors and tails of a new generation of banana, and it's really going to change the way we live. So remember that, next time you hate on bananas.

Also, G5 Powerbooks tuesday....at least, according to my deep underground sources...which I can't talk any more about....

There's zero incentive for Apple to do that. They're in the business of making $$. If they made a phone, and supported it for 5 - 7 years, no one would buy new ones, therefore no revenue. It's all about making cash...

Plus, a phone going on 3 plus years is pretty good. You got you money's worth. Sell it on E Bay-or Craigslist, and make some cash. Or like you said, an iPod.

Yeah, but given they still sell the 3GS as a new phone, they should make a 3G version that is lighter on the processor so it's snappier or just provide the 3.X version.

Personally I haven't listened to them much in years, and last month did a retrospective of their stuff (http://www.geardiary.com/2010/11/09/music-diary-retrospective-a-magical-mystery-tour-of-the-beatles-catalog/)... it was interesting since most of my memory comes from the original US LP's my brother owned.

I really don't listen to much pop music ... I mention Pat Metheny as it is about as close to mainstream stuff as I get. So for me they aren't so tired ... certainly less so than the Eminem my older son listens to so much ...

I worded my original poorly, I was speaking of influence and being derivative ... Zepplin is a great example, as whether or not they were good, they were heavily influenced by the Beatles, Who, Jeff Beck group, and so on ... and it shows heavily in their work.

That's cool. I knew what you were getting at.

I've recently rediscovered "Abbey Road", which I've been playing a lot of (mostly starting with track 6 and playing to the "The End"). It really is timeless and reminds me of many other bands.

My iBook qualifies and I just went through the process. Website says Apple will send a new battery, then I have to send the old one back. My old one is doing just fine, does anyone know what will happen if I don't send it back? I'd rather have two good batteries, even if one may explode (1 in a million chance).

I checked out the 3DS at a Target and felt the 3D effect was cheesy. It reminded me of a magic eye effect, or a hologram baseball card. I did read about the "sweet spot", but that seems really tedious to have to keep a handheld at just the right angle at all times.

Those kiosks are low so that kids can play with them - much harder for adults to use it.

I got to try one out not on a display and it was great - especially the AR games are lots of fun...

You can turn the 3D off and the graphics and screen quality are still great.
